The presidential election is less than two months away.
We are confronted daily by news shows and political polls which ask the question: will Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton be the next President of the United States?
The question of who will lead America is significant. Leadership and service are important in the church and in government.
But more important than the question of who will lead America is the question of will Americans follow the Lord?
In the book of Judges we see images of good national leaders and poor ones. Othniel, Barak, Gideon, and Samson demonstrate that God uses fallen, broken people to lead others. There are good judges and bad judges leading Israel.
Yet, Judges highlights the importance of the Israelites commitment to the Lord rather than their commitment to Gideon or Samson.
God repeatedly raised up leaders for Israel because Israel continued to reject the Lord and worshiped the idols of Canaan. Rejecting the Lord led to national oppression in Canaan. Instead of honoring the Lord who brought them out of Egypt and into Canaan, they made sacrifices to Baal because they thought Baal brought rain for their crops.
Today, instead of focusing on who will lead us, let's focus on honoring the Triune God and rejecting the idols of America (money, sex, power, success).
On Tuesday, November 8 we will elect a new president.
However, the Triune God will still be on the throne of the universe and will still demand worship and obedience.
While it is easy to be anxious over presidential politics, we can trust that God is in control over all things. Today, just as during the time of Samson and Gideon, God desires for us to faithfully follow him.
