The Ravenel Bridge is a local landmark. Images of the 575 ft. high bridge appear on countless t-shirts, hats, coffee mugs, and business logos throughout Charleston County. But the bridge is more than a landmark or novelty.
Spanning the Cooper River, the bridge connects Mt. Pleasant to Charleston. It is a means of transportation for drivers, walkers, and cyclists. The bridge conveniently connects people east and west of the Cooper River.
In Scripture, God did not provide a cable-stayed bridge for Moses and his people when they left Egypt and crossed the Red Sea. He didn't even build a bridge for Joshua when he crossed the Jordan to take hold of the land promised to Abraham centuries earlier.
God did not provide a tangible bridge for Moses or Joshua, but he does provide a spiritual bridge for every individual to move from the curse of sin and death to the land of eternal life and peace.
The bridge God provides is found at the cross of Jesus Christ.
At the cross, Jesus Christ died for your sins and paid the penalty for sin that you deserved to pay. He took on death so that you could live. He took on the wrath of God so that you could experience the peace of God.
The Apostle Paul writes, "For in him (Jesus Christ) all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his CROSS" (Colossians 1.19-20).
Jesus Christ reconciles sinful men and women to a holy God by offering his life on the cross to cover your sin and guilt.
Consequently, as you read Scripture remember there is a bridge that dominates the landscape of the pages of God's Word. It is a spiritual bridge. The cross is the bridge where each person has the opportunity to travel from the kingdom of sin and darkness to the kingdom of God's eternal Son (Colossians 1.12-14).
