What matters to you?

What do you value in your life?

Some people value their career, some their family, and others their possessions. Some people place a high value on their intellect or on their physical ability, personality or appearance.

In 1 Samuel 26, David is fleeing from King Saul. The King of Israel wants David dead. David is trying to survive while he runs from Saul in the wilderness. As a survivalist, David has a lot of valuable items to help him stay alive - he has weapons, he has 600 loyal troops to defend him, and he has an impressive knowledge of the land which is helpful when you need to hide from a king and his 3,000 men who are trying to kill you.

David has a portfolio of valuable assets in his life. However, the most valuable possession David has is not a sword, shield, knife, or sling. The most valuable item David possesses is true faith in God.

David trusts God and God's promises to him. God promised David he would be the next King and David believed God - he believed God's promise to him. David's actions were guided by his trust in a gracious and sovereign God.

Think about what you value in your life. What is it?

According to the Bible, the most valuable possession you can have is genuine faith in the Triune God. Faith is more valuable than your bank account, your home, or your career. Faith is priceless because it is by faith that you receive God's gifts to you - justification, adoption in God's family, the hope of the resurrection from the dead, and the promise of eternal life.

Faith matters most because faith looks to God and his work. Faith recognizes that you do not achieve or earn God's eternal blessings because God has already won them for you through the life, death, and resurrection of the Son of God on the cross 2,000 years ago.
